One of my biggest travel superpowers is being able to sleep on airplanes.
And if you travel a lot—especially to theme parks around the country or internationally—you know how valuable that skill can be.
Here’s exactly how I do it.
The Theme Parkette's 10-Step Method for Sleeping on Planes
Step 1: Stand Before Boarding
While waiting to board, I stay on my feet as much as possible.
Since I know I’ll be sitting for hours, I want my body to move beforehand.
Step 2: Bring an Empty Water Bottle
I always bring an empty water bottle and fill it with water in the airport before boarding.
Hydration helps a lot when flying. Also, I won't need to wake up to order a drink.
Step 3: Skip Airline Snacks
This might be controversial, but I usually bring my own snacks.
That way I don’t need to wake up for food service.
Step 4: Use the Bathroom Before Boarding
If I want to sleep, the goal is to avoid getting up during the flight.
So I always make sure to go before boarding. This won't work for international flights, but timing your bathroom visits is definitely key.
Step 5: Wear Layers
Cabin temperatures vary a lot.
Wearing layers means I can adjust without getting up.
Step 6: Choose a Window Seat
Window seats are ideal for sleeping.
You can lean against the wall and you won’t be disturbed by people getting up.
Step 7: Close the Window
Less light helps your brain transition into sleep mode.
Step 8: Use a Sleep Mask and a Neck Pillow
A sleep mask blocks light and signals to others that you’re trying to sleep. A good neck pillow provides comfort.
Step 9: Headphones or Earbuds
I prefer wired earbuds.
If they fall out while I’m asleep, I won’t lose them.
Step 10: Try to Sleep Immediately
The key is starting the sleep process right away.
Not after takeoff.
Not after snacks.
Not after a movie.
Right away.
