What Are Roller Coaster Seats Made Of?

What Roller Coaster Seats Are Made Of

Have you ever wondered what roller coaster seats are actually made from?

To find out, I spoke with Andy Vogelsang from Ralph Alberts Company.

The Structure of a Coaster Seat

Most roller coaster seats start with a fiberglass backing shell.

This creates a strong, durable base structure.

The Padding System

On top of that fiberglass shell is a two-part integral skin urethane foam system.

That foam provides the cushioning riders feel when seated.

But it’s not just about comfort.

Safety First

The amount of padding and firmness is carefully determined through engineering tests.

Manufacturers must consider things like:

  • Ride forces
    Rider positioning
    Safety restraint performance

Engineers use something called durometer testing, which measures how firm or soft the padding should be.

Final Thoughts

Roller coaster seats may look simple, but they’re carefully engineered pieces of safety equipment.

Every detail—from foam firmness to seat shape—is designed to keep riders secure and comfortable.
